CHAPTER 14
âWhat do you say to playing hooky?â Betty said as soon as I walked in the door.
Cordelia was draping a scarf around her neck, and when she heard Bettyâs question, her eyebrows shot to mountainous peaks. âAre you actually asking Pepper to not open her shop today?â
Betty scowled at my cousin. âWas I talking to you, kid?â
âNo, but Iâve never heard you suggest anything like that before.â
âThereâs a first time for anything.â Betty unbuckled Gizzy from her stroller and gave her kisses on each cheek. âBesides, I like spending time with both my girls.â
Cordeliaâs gaze shot to me, and she rolled her eyes. âAnyway, Iâm going to be late for work if I donât get a move on.â
âHowâs the wishing business going?â I asked.
âFine. Weâve got an old lady coming in today to relive her youth. You know, itâs real Fantasy Island kind of stuff.â
âThat sounds like my kind of day,â I said with a grin.
âItâs fun seeing people smile, unless that person is your grandmother whoâs up to no good.â
Betty scowled at the remark. âGet out of here, kid, before I spell pimples all over your nose.â
Cordelia laughed. âYouâve never done it before.â
âDonât tempt me.â
Cordelia was still laughing when she exited the house. Soon as she was gone, I said to Betty with excitement in my voice. âDo you know what? I was already thinking that I wanted to play hooky. I donât feel like going in to work, and Iâd love to do something with you.â
Yes, I suppose my conscience shouldâve kicked in then and told me that I was being selfish and irresponsible. That I was supposed to open my shop.
But I didnât feel like it. Besides, I was tired from working all that wonderful magic at Ameliaâs. I deserved a break.
Betty grinned. âI thought you might say that.â
âYeah, ever since I got my magic back, Iâve been feeling, I donât know, frisky, I guess.â
âMe too.â Betty cackled. âI havenât felt this young in years. Come on. Want to see what sort of trouble we can get up to?â
âSure. But when you say trouble, you donât actually mean trouble, do you?â
Bettyâs eyes sparkled like diamonds. âWould it be a problem if I did?â
I pondered on that one. It took me a good ten seconds to come up with an answer of, âYou know what? I donât think it would be a problem at all.â
