CHAPTER 14

“What do you say to playing hooky?” Betty said as soon as I walked in the door.

Cordelia was draping a scarf around her neck, and when she heard Betty’s question, her eyebrows shot to mountainous peaks. “Are you actually asking Pepper to not open her shop today?”

Betty scowled at my cousin. “Was I talking to you, kid?”

“No, but I’ve never heard you suggest anything like that before.”

“There’s a first time for anything.” Betty unbuckled Gizzy from her stroller and gave her kisses on each cheek. “Besides, I like spending time with both my girls.”

Cordelia’s gaze shot to me, and she rolled her eyes. “Anyway, I’m going to be late for work if I don’t get a move on.”

“How’s the wishing business going?” I asked.

“Fine. We’ve got an old lady coming in today to relive her youth. You know, it’s real Fantasy Island kind of stuff.”

“That sounds like my kind of day,” I said with a grin.

“It’s fun seeing people smile, unless that person is your grandmother who’s up to no good.”

Betty scowled at the remark. “Get out of here, kid, before I spell pimples all over your nose.”

Cordelia laughed. “You’ve never done it before.”

“Don’t tempt me.”

Cordelia was still laughing when she exited the house. Soon as she was gone, I said to Betty with excitement in my voice. “Do you know what? I was already thinking that I wanted to play hooky. I don’t feel like going in to work, and I’d love to do something with you.”

Yes, I suppose my conscience should’ve kicked in then and told me that I was being selfish and irresponsible. That I was supposed to open my shop.

But I didn’t feel like it. Besides, I was tired from working all that wonderful magic at Amelia’s. I deserved a break.

Betty grinned. “I thought you might say that.”

“Yeah, ever since I got my magic back, I’ve been feeling, I don’t know, frisky, I guess.”

“Me too.” Betty cackled. “I haven’t felt this young in years. Come on. Want to see what sort of trouble we can get up to?”

“Sure. But when you say trouble, you don’t actually mean trouble, do you?”

Betty’s eyes sparkled like diamonds. “Would it be a problem if I did?”

I pondered on that one. It took me a good ten seconds to come up with an answer of, “You know what? I don’t think it would be a problem at all.”
